Akebono Brake Industry

Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. (曙ブレーキ工業) is a publicly traded Japanese automotive components manufacturer specializing in braking systems. It trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TYO: 7238) and was founded on 27 January 1929 by Sanji Osame. Formerly known as Akebono Sekimen Kogyo Co., Ltd., it adopted its current name in 1960.

The company maintains a Global Head Office in Nihonbashi Muromachi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, along with its Ai-City headquarters site in Hanyu City, Saitama. As an independent specialized brake manufacturer, Akebono develops and produces friction materials such as brake pads and brake linings, as well as functional components like disc brakes and drum brakes, for automobiles, industrial machinery and railway vehicles. It operates across Japan, North America, Europe, China, Thailand and other markets.

Its main OEM customers include all major Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi and Isuzu, plus North American and global customers including Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Stellantis, Subaru and Volvo. The company reported revenue of about JPY 281.3 billion for FY2015 with roughly 9,238 consolidated employees (as of March 2016); its official profile more recently lists net sales of approximately JPY 160.1 billion and capital of JPY 19.9 billion (consolidated, as of March 2026).
