Babylon Health

Babylon Health was a digital health company founded in 2013 by British-Iranian entrepreneur Ali Parsa that used artificial intelligence to deliver virtual clinical services. Its platform offered an AI-powered symptom checker, virtual consultations with doctors and therapists, prescription delivery, and proactive health monitoring, accessible via mobile and web applications.

The company operated across more than 15 countries, generating revenue through direct-to-consumer subscriptions, pay-as-you-go services, insurer partnerships (including Bupa), and government contracts. Its most prominent contract was with the NHS in the UK, where its "GP at Hand" service provided free virtual appointments to over 100,000 patients. It also held a partnership with the Rwandan government to deliver digital primary care.

Babylon raised $550 million in 2019 at a $2 billion valuation and went public via a SPAC merger in October 2021 at a $4.2 billion valuation. However, it subsequently lost major NHS contracts, posted mounting losses, and saw its share price collapse. By August 2023 it had shuttered its Austin headquarters and laid off staff. Substantially all of its UK assets were sold to eMed for a reported $620,000.

Babylon's collapse — from a multi-billion-dollar valuation to near-total failure — has been widely cited as a cautionary tale for AI-driven health ventures, drawing comparisons to Theranos. Its GP at Hand NHS service continues under the eMed brand, and founder Ali Parsa has since launched a new healthcare AI venture called Qu.
