Wikipedia – Beyond MeatBeyond Meat, Inc. (Nasdaq: BYND) is a plant-based meat alternative company founded in 2009 by Ethan Brown and headquartered in El Segundo, California. Built on technology licensed from University of Missouri researchers, the company launched its first product at Whole Foods in 2012 and has since grown into a global brand spanning 65 countries.
The company's core product line includes the Beyond Burger, plant-based sausages, chicken, pork, meatballs, crumbles, nuggets, and jerky, all using pea protein sourced primarily from Roquette Frères. As of December 2024, Beyond Meat's products were available across 27,000 U.S. retail outlets, 38,000 international retail outlets, and tens of thousands of foodservice locations worldwide.
Beyond Meat made history in May 2019 as the first plant-based meat company to go public, raising $240 million in an IPO whose stock surged 163% on its debut day. After nine consecutive quarters of revenue decline, the company reported two consecutive quarters of year-over-year net revenue growth in 2024, with Q4 2024 revenues of $76.7 million and a gross margin of 13.1%.
With approximately 808 employees globally and ongoing restructuring—including workforce reductions and suspension of China operations—Beyond Meat is targeting an EBITDA-positive run-rate by end of 2026. Innovations in plant-based protein formulation, manufacturing efficiency, and taste/texture parity with animal meat are directly relevant to its core competitive position.
