Boehringer Ingelheim was founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer in Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany, growing from a 28-person chemical factory producing lactic acid into one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies — and the largest that remains privately held. The company operates as C.H. Boehringer Sohn AG & Co. KG and employs approximately 54,300 people worldwide, serving patients in over 130 markets.

The company operates two primary business segments: Human Pharma (approximately 81–82% of sales) and Animal Health. Its Human Pharma portfolio spans cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, oncology, respiratory, immunology, mental health, and retinal diseases, with top products including Jardiance, Ofev, Trajenta/Jentadueto, and Spiriva collectively contributing more than half of Human Pharma revenues. The Animal Health segment includes flagship products such as NexGard.

In 2024, Boehringer Ingelheim reported EUR 14.0 billion in net sales. The company is heavily research-driven, with active investment in oncology, pulmonary fibrosis, mental health, and immunology. In July 2024, it acquired Nerio Therapeutics for up to $1.3 billion to strengthen its immuno-oncology pipeline with preclinical small-molecule inhibitors.
