Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning Official SiteThe Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) responsible for coordinating regional land use and transportation planning. Its jurisdiction spans seven counties: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will.
CMAP integrates land use and transportation planning, notably producing the region's long-range comprehensive plan known as ON TO 2050. The agency was created by the State of Illinois through the merger of the Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) and the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC).
Governed by a board of local elected officials and civic representatives, CMAP manages transportation investment decisions via the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and provides local technical assistance (LTA) to municipalities. Innovation in this space is relevant to their ongoing work with regional indicators, trend reporting, and the implementation of the ON TO 2050 plan.
