CHOP – About UsChildren's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) was founded in 1855, making it the first hospital in the United States dedicated exclusively to the care and treatment of children. A nonprofit, charitable organization, CHOP is headquartered in the University City neighborhood of West Philadelphia, adjacent to the University of Pennsylvania. Its network spans 50+ Care Network locations and three hospital campuses, including one devoted to behavioral health.
CHOP operates at significant scale, with 724 beds in use, more than 1.6 million outpatient and inpatient visits annually, and approximately 19,881 employees as of FY2025. In that same year, net patient service revenue reached approximately $4.21 billion and total revenue sources approximately $5.20 billion. The hospital is led by President and CEO Madeline Bell.
CHOP is also a major research institution, with a facility first established in 1922 that now encompasses 577,000 square feet and more than 1,160 principal investigators. Research revenue was approximately $407 million in FY2025. CHOP has been a global leader in gene therapy, co-producing the first FDA-approved gene therapy for an inherited form of blindness (recognized with a Breakthrough Prize) and administering the world's first personalized CRISPR gene-editing therapy to a child with a rare genetic disease.
