City Police Departments

General category of municipal law enforcement agencies.

The term "City Police Departments" refers to a general category of local government law enforcement agencies operating within municipalities rather than a single identifiable organization. Individual departments, such as the NYPD or LAPD, maintain their own distinct identities, budgets, and jurisdictions.

While not a single entity, these agencies are often represented by professional umbrella associations. Examples include the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), which serves police executives of the largest cities in the U.S. and Canada, and the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), which represents over 2,000 police units.
