Clinical Research Organizations (CROs)
Service providers hired by pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device firms to manage clinical trials.
National Cancer InstituteClinical Research Organizations (CROs), also known as Contract Research Organizations, are companies hired by sponsors such as drug developers or research centers to design, manage, and monitor clinical trials. They provide a cost-efficient alternative to in-house development and are especially critical for small biotech innovators.
Their services span Phase I–IV drug development and include study startup, site selection, data management, pharmacovigilance, regulatory submissions, and project management. Leading global players in this space include IQVIA, ICON plc, Parexel, PPD, Syneos Health, Fortrea, Medpace, and Tigermed.
The market scale for CRO services is significant, with estimates ranging from approximately USD 45 billion to USD 92 billion depending on the report and scope. A large portion of new trial starts are concentrated in oncology, immunology, neurology, and cardiovascular research.
