Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is a commercial fusion energy company founded in 2018 as a spinout from MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Based in Devens, Massachusetts, the company utilizes high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets made from REBCO tape to build compact tokamak fusion devices that are smaller and lower-cost than conventional reactors.

The company is currently developing SPARC, a tokamak designed to demonstrate net fusion energy gain, and ARC, a commercial power plant design with a capacity of approximately 400 MWe. In late 2024, CFS announced its first ARC plant site in Chesterfield County, Virginia, in partnership with Dominion Energy.

CFS has secured strategic and financial investments from entities including Eni, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Temasek, and Equinor, raising capital in the low single-digit billions. It has also entered into a power purchase agreement with Google for 200 MW of future fusion capacity.
