Germany-based Language AI company behind DeepL Translator and enterprise translation tools

DeepL — About Us

DeepL is a Germany-based Language AI company founded in Cologne in 2017 by CEO Jarek Kutylowski. Structured as DeepL SE and still headquartered in Cologne, it has grown from a single translation product into one of the world's leading Language AI companies. Its founder and CEO, Jaroslaw "Jarek" Kutylowski, holds a PhD in Computer Science and previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Linguee, the company's predecessor dictionary/translation venture.

DeepL provides a unified Language AI platform aimed at enterprises, offering human-like, natural-sounding translations in over 100 languages. Its core products include the DeepL Translator, the DeepL Write text-improvement assistant, DeepL Voice for real-time speech translation, and the DeepL API. Through API access, customers can make content, apps, and products multilingual, customize translations at scale with glossaries, and benefit from text deletion immediately after translation.

More than 200,000 business teams and millions of individuals worldwide—across every major industry—rely on DeepL for language workflows requiring accuracy, human-like quality, and enterprise-grade security. Third-party trackers report headcount of roughly 1,570 employees as of early 2026 (an unofficial estimate).

In May 2024, DeepL announced $300 million of investment at a $2 billion valuation in a round led by Index Ventures, with participation from ICONIQ Growth, Teachers' Venture Growth, and existing investors IVP, Atomico, and WiL. It had previously raised over $100 million in a January 2023 Series C round led by IVP at a $1 billion valuation, marking its entry into unicorn status. As a company whose entire business is built on machine translation and language AI, innovations in this space are directly central to its core technology and products.
