Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) Brands

A retail model where manufacturers sell products directly to end customers, bypassing intermediaries.

Shopify

Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) is a business model in which brand owners and manufacturers sell straight to the end customer, bypassing wholesalers, distributors, and third-party retailers. These brands typically operate via their own e-commerce sites, owned-media channels, and subscription programs, allowing them to control pricing, branding, and the full purchase experience while leveraging first-party data.

The modern DTC movement gained momentum between 2010 and 2015 with digitally native brands such as Warby Parker, Dollar Shave Club, and Casper. The global DTC e-commerce market is estimated at approximately $163 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $595 billion by 2033, with DTC sales currently accounting for about one in seven e-commerce dollars globally.

Innovation in this space is highly relevant because DTC brands operate as a distinct buyer segment. Unlike traditional wholesale models, they are heavily dependent on customer data platforms, owned-channel performance, fulfillment, and retention economics.
