Early-career Orthodontists

A professional demographic of dental specialists in the initial stages of their orthodontic practice.

AAO - What is an Orthodontist and Dentofacial Orthopedist?

Early-career orthodontists are dental specialists who have completed a dental degree (DDS/DMD) followed by a two to three-year residency in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, often earning a master's degree in the process. This educational pathway typically exceeds 10 years of total study. While state licensure is required to practice, board certification through the ABO is voluntary.

This demographic is characterized by high educational debt and a shifting career pattern where new practitioners are more likely to start as associates, including within corporate or DSO-affiliated practices, rather than becoming immediate practice owners. They are heavily integrated into the professional community through the AAO and AAO Foundation, which provide dedicated resources and programs for residents and those in their first years of practice.
