East African Seed Co. Ltd

Kenyan seed, crop protection, and farm equipment company serving East and Central Africa since 1972

East African Seed Co. Ltd — Company Profile

East African Seed Co. Ltd (branded "EASEED") is a Kenyan agricultural inputs company specializing in seeds, crop protection products, and farming equipment. Founded in 1972 by the late Mr. L. V. Shah, it has grown into one of the leading seed companies in the East and Central African region, with its Africa headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Since 1995 the company has expanded across the region, establishing branches in Tanzania (Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza), Uganda (Kampala), Rwanda (Kigali), and Zambia (Lusaka), supported by a wide distribution network of appointed dealers and stockists. It supplies a broad range of field-crop and vegetable seeds (both hybrids and open-pollinated varieties), ornamental seed, agrochemicals, and equipment — with maize, tomato, and watermelon among its main crops. Smallholder farmers are its primary clientele. The group markets under brands including EASEED (Eastern Africa), Syova Seeds (Zambia), and Agriscope (agrochemicals).

In 2003 the company spun off its agrochemical division into a separate entity, Agriscope (Africa) Ltd, under the EASEED group. The company is privately held. In the Access to Seeds Index for Eastern and Southern Africa (2021), the company/Agriscope Africa ranked among the top performers in the region.

As a major seed and inputs supplier focused on smallholder farmers across multiple countries, innovations in seed varieties, crop protection, and agricultural distribution are directly relevant to its operations and reach.
