Eden Projects Official SiteEden Reforestation Projects, which rebranded in 2024 as "Eden: People + Planet," is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Dr. Stephen Fitch. The organization employs a model of hiring local villagers in developing regions to plant, grow, and guard native trees, aiming to restore forests while alleviating extreme poverty.
The organization operates across approximately ten countries, including Ethiopia, Madagascar, Kenya, Mozambique, Nepal, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, and Brazil. It has reported planting over 900 million trees, positioning itself as one of the largest tree-planting nonprofits by volume with a reported per-tree cost of approximately $0.10.
In 2023, investigative reporting raised allegations regarding the overstatement of tree survival and carbon-capture claims, as well as issues concerning leadership conduct and worker treatment. In response, the founder stepped down and the organization commissioned independent reviews.
