European Commission – DG CONNECT Official PageDG CONNECT (Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology) is a department of the European Commission responsible for developing and implementing policies to prepare Europe for the digital age. Established on 1 July 2012 as the successor to DG INFSO, it operates under the leadership of Director-General Roberto Viola and the European Commissioner for Digital and Frontier Technologies, Henna Virkkunen (since December 2024).
Its mandate spans a broad range of strategic digital domains, including artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, 5G, cybersecurity, data economy, micro-electronics, blockchain, and quantum computing. DG CONNECT enforces key EU regulations governing online platforms, digital markets, and AI, while promoting digital skills, media freedom, and the creative sector across EU member states.
DG CONNECT manages major EU funding instruments such as the Digital Europe Programme and leads strategic direction for digital technologies within Horizon Europe (Cluster 4: Digital, Industry and Space). These programmes support projects aimed at advancing Europe's technological sovereignty and achieving the Digital Decade targets for 2030.
As the body responsible for creating a Digital Single Market, DG CONNECT is a central actor for any organisation developing digital innovations—particularly in AI, data infrastructure, or connectivity—that seek alignment with EU policy priorities, regulatory frameworks, or access to European funding mechanisms.
