European Environment Agency

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union established by EEC Regulation 1210/1990, becoming operational in 1994 and headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. Its mission is to provide sound, independent information on the environment to support those involved in developing, adopting, implementing, and evaluating environmental policy, as well as to inform the general public.

The EEA has approximately 300 staff and is governed by a Management Board, with Leena Ylä-Mononen serving as Executive Director since 1 June 2023. It works in close collaboration with the European Environmental Information and Observation Network (Eionet), which spans 32 member countries, to gather, compile, and assess environmental data from diverse sources across Europe and beyond, including candidate and neighboring countries.

Core tasks include supporting policy development, offering analytical expertise, and maintaining a reporting infrastructure for national and international data flows. The EEA's work is strategically aligned with key EU initiatives such as the European Green Deal, making it a central hub for environmental science and data that underpins European legislation and environmental protection efforts.
