Europeana

Europeana is an independent, non-profit foundation (Stichting Europeana) incorporated under Dutch law and housed within the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the national library of the Netherlands) in The Hague. It was established following a 2005 joint letter from six European heads of state urging the creation of a virtual European library, and its prototype launched in November 2008 with access to 4.5 million digital objects.

Today, more than 3,000 institutions — including the Rijksmuseum, the British Library, and the Louvre — have contributed to Europeana, which as of 2024 provides access to records of over 50 million objects. Rather than storing content centrally, Europeana aggregates metadata and thumbnail images, directing users to the originating institution's own systems. The organisation employs approximately 60 staff representing around 20 nationalities.

Tasked by the European Commission as part of a 19-partner consortium, Europeana stewards the common European data space for cultural heritage. Its Vision 2030 strategic plan (Adapt. Adopt. Aspire. Achieve.) focuses on supporting the cultural heritage sector through digital transformation, with a mission to democratise access to Europe's culture for enthusiasts, researchers, educators, and professionals alike.
