Founded on 12 September 2007 through the restructuring of the mining and technology group RAG AG, it is the second-largest chemicals company in Germany and one of the largest specialty chemicals companies globally. Its shares have been traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since April 2013, and it is predominantly owned by the RAG Foundation.
Evonik operates production plants in 27 countries across six continents and is active in more than 100 countries, employing approximately 31,000–32,000 people. In 2024 the company generated sales of €15.2 billion and an adjusted EBITDA of €2.1 billion, with around 80% of sales coming from areas where it holds leading market positions.
In late 2024, Evonik reorganised into two core segments: Custom Solutions (innovation-driven niche businesses including additives for paints, coatings, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, ~7,000 employees) and Advanced Technologies (efficiency-driven businesses including high-performance polymers and hydrogen peroxide production, ~8,000 employees).
The company's specialty chemicals serve a broad range of end markets — automotive, pharmaceuticals, animal nutrition, personal care, aerospace, agriculture, electronics, and coatings — making it a relevant partner for innovations across virtually any industry that relies on advanced materials, formulations, or chemical processes.
