The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) operates within the Department of Justice with a mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution. Founded in 1908, the agency is headquartered at the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C., though a replacement headquarters project in Greenbelt, Maryland, has been in progress.

With an annual budget of approximately $11 billion, the FBI employs roughly 38,000 personnel, including special agents and intelligence analysts. Its operational footprint includes 56 field offices in major U.S. cities, about 350 resident agencies, and legal attaché offices located overseas.

As the lead federal agency for terrorism investigations, the FBI manages a wide range of responsibilities including counterintelligence, cybercrime, public corruption, civil rights violations, organized and violent crime, and matters involving weapons of mass destruction.
