GDS (UK Government Digital Service)

The UK government's specialist unit for building and transforming digital public services

GDS About Page – GOV.UK

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is an executive unit within the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), responsible for setting and delivering the vision for a modern digital government. Formed in April 2011, GDS pioneered agile methodologies and user-centred design in the public sector, building services around user needs rather than departmental silos.

GDS owns the product strategy and delivery for several major government platforms, including GOV.UK (the UK's central government website, launched in 2012 and estimated to have saved £70 million by consolidating hundreds of sites), GOV.UK One Login (a single sign-on and identity-verification system used by 50 services as of October 2024), and the GOV.UK App (launched in public beta in July 2025). It also leads work on AI products for government, geospatial data, the National Data Library, and the National Underground Asset Register.

In January 2025, DSIT announced a merger of several organisations into a single body that would continue to operate under the GDS name. GDS also leads the Government Digital and Data function and has engaged counterpart organisations internationally to help position the UK as a leader in digital public services.

An innovation touching on digital identity, AI-driven public services, data infrastructure, or citizen-facing platforms would be directly relevant to GDS's remit and its mission to deliver a simple, joined-up, and personalised government experience for everyone.
