Google Quantum AI

Google Quantum AI is a research division of Google LLC (a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.) founded in 2012 by Hartmut Neven. The organization operates a dedicated fabrication and research campus in Santa Barbara, California, utilizing a vertically integrated approach to design, build, and cool its own quantum processors, control electronics, and algorithms.

The division is a recognized leader in superconducting-qubit technology, notably achieving quantum supremacy in 2019 with the 53-qubit Sycamore processor. More recently, it developed the Willow chip, reaching a below-threshold error-correction milestone in 2024. In March 2026, the lab expanded its hardware strategy to include neutral atom hardware, led by Dr. Adam Kaufman in Boulder, Colorado.

With a mission to solve otherwise unsolvable problems, Google Quantum AI collaborates with academic and industry partners in fields such as energy, materials science, and chemistry. Its standing in the field is further highlighted by its appointment as a representative on the Commission on U.S. Quantum Primacy.
