Government of Maldives

The Government of the Maldives operates as a unitary presidential constitutional republic where the President serves as both the Head of State and Head of Government. The government is structured into three branches: an Executive branch led by the president and cabinet, a unicameral legislature known as the People's Majlis, and a Judicial branch consisting of various courts including the Supreme Court.

Economically, the government oversees a nation where tourism is the primary driver of activity, contributing nearly 30 percent of GDP and over 60 percent of foreign currency earnings. The Maldives currently holds the highest GDP per capita in South Asia.

Due to the country's high vulnerability to rising sea levels and floods, the government has prioritized climate sustainability. President Mohamed Muizzu has committed to developing renewable energy systems to meet 33 percent of the nation's electricity needs within the next five years.
