Hugging Face

Open-source AI platform and machine learning hub known as the 'GitHub of machine learning'

Wikipedia – Hugging Face

Hugging Face, Inc. is an American AI company headquartered in New York City, founded in 2016 by French entrepreneurs Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf. Originally launched as a teen-focused chatbot app, the company pivoted by 2019 to become an open-source AI platform providing model libraries, tooling, and infrastructure for the machine learning community.

The platform hosts models and datasets from over 215,000 firms and organizations — including Meta, Microsoft, UNESCO, and various government ministries — and serves approximately 10 million users who collaborate on models, datasets, and applications. Key products include the widely-used Transformers library for NLP, the BLOOM 176-billion-parameter open-source large language model, and HuggingChat, an open-source alternative to ChatGPT.

Hugging Face has raised a total of $395.2 million in funding, including a $235 million Series D round in 2023 that valued the company at $4.5 billion, with backing from Nvidia, Google, Salesforce, and Amazon. The company also announced a partnership with AWS to make its products available as building blocks for custom applications.

In April 2025, Hugging Face acquired Pollen Robotics, a French humanoid robotics startup, signaling an expansion into open-source AI robotics. Its stated mission is to democratize good machine learning and maximize its positive impact across industries and society.
