Invitae

Medical genetics company specializing in genetic testing for oncology, cardiology, and pediatrics — now part of Labcorp.

Labcorp Investor Relations – Labcorp Finalizes Acquisition of Select Assets of Invitae

Invitae Corp. was a biotechnology and medical genetics company founded as a subsidiary of Genomic Health in 2010 and spun off as an independent company in 2012. It positioned itself as a leading medical genetics company, offering CAP-accredited and CLIA-certified genetic testing across oncology, cardiology, and pediatric medicine, designed to detect hereditary diseases and inform personalized health management.

The company leveraged robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and software engineering to deliver accurate genetic results at scale. Invitae went public on NASDAQ in early 2015 at $17.80 per share and pursued aggressive growth through acquisitions, including Good Start Genetics, CombiMatrix, and ArcherDX (acquired for $1.4 billion in 2020).

Invitae filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 13, 2024, reporting estimated assets of $500 million–$1 billion against liabilities of $1–$10 billion. Labcorp subsequently acquired select Invitae assets for approximately $239 million in cash plus non-cash consideration, with the transaction closing in early August 2024.

Today, Labcorp and Invitae together offer more than 6,500 tests, are in-network with most major health plans, and support patients, clinicians, and pharmaceutical partners across diagnosis, therapy development, and personalized care. Genetic innovation — including AI-driven diagnostics and expanded gene panels — remains highly relevant to this combined entity.
