Janssen Pharmaceuticals

Global pharmaceutical company and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary focused on specialty drug discovery and development

Wikipedia – Janssen Pharmaceuticals

Janssen Pharmaceuticals is a major global pharmaceutical company founded in 1953 by Dr. Paul Janssen in Beerse, Belgium, where it remains headquartered. Unlike many peers, it was established from the outset purely for pharmacological research rather than as an offshoot of a chemical business. In 1961, Johnson & Johnson acquired Janssen, and it now operates as a core part of J&J's pharmaceutical division under the name Janssen Research and Development, LLC.

The company focuses on six key therapeutic areas: Cardiovascular & Metabolism, Immunology, Infectious Diseases & Vaccines, Neuroscience, Oncology, and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Since its founding, Janssen has developed more than 80 drugs, and five of its medicines appear on the WHO's list of essential drugs, including haloperidol and miconazole.

Janssen is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical operations by revenue, with sales reaching $52.1 billion in 2021, up from $45.6 billion in 2020. The company employs approximately 45,000 people and invested $11.9 billion in R&D in 2021 alone, with $42.2 billion spent on R&D from 2016 to 2020. Top-performing products include Stelara, Darzalex, Erleada, and Tremfya. Its global footprint spans R&D facilities in Belgium and the US, and manufacturing sites across Europe and Puerto Rico, making it highly relevant to innovations in drug development, biologics, oncology, and immunology.
