Johnson Matthey
British specialty chemicals leader in platinum group metals and sustainable technologies
Johnson Matthey — About UsJohnson Matthey plc (JM) is a British specialty chemicals and sustainable technologies company and a world leader in platinum group metals (PGMs). For over 200 years it has applied advanced metals chemistry to tackle major global challenges, and many of the world's leading energy, chemicals and automotive companies depend on its technology and expertise to decarbonise.
The company traces its roots to 1817, when founder Percival Johnson established himself at 79 Hatton Garden in Holborn, London, as an "Assayer and Practical Mineralogist." It was incorporated as a public limited company in 1891 and has been involved in processing and marketing precious metals since its founding. JM is headquartered in London (registered office at 5th Floor, 2 Gresham Street, EC2V 7AD) and is listed on the London Stock Exchange under ticker JMAT as a FTSE 250 component.
Historically JM operated through three segments — Clean Air, Efficient Natural Resources, and Other Markets. Following a strategic reshaping and the divestment of its Catalyst Technologies business, it is focusing on two segments: Clean Air and PGM Services. Its product range spans emission control catalysts, industrial catalysts, absorbents, process technologies, fine chemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, medical device components, colours, coatings, fuel cell technology and battery technology.
The company employs roughly 10,644 people globally and reported annual revenue of approximately £11.7 billion for FY 2025. In a notable recent development, on 22 May 2025 JM announced an agreement to sell its Catalyst Technologies business to Honeywell International at an enterprise value of £1.8 billion on a cash and debt-free basis. Given its scale, deep metals chemistry expertise and decarbonisation focus, innovation in this space is highly relevant to JM's strategy and customer base.
