Founded by Colonel Harland Sanders in Corbin, Kentucky, the brand began franchising in 1952 and later became the first Western quick-service restaurant chain to enter China in 1987.
As a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., KFC is the largest of the company's legacy brands by restaurant count and system sales. As of March 2024, the chain operates more than 30,000 restaurants across over 145 countries and territories, with the majority of these locations being franchised.
While Yum! Brands maintains its global headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, KFC announced in February 2025 that its U.S. corporate headquarters would relocate to Plano, Texas.
