Khan Academy Kids

Khan Academy Kids is the early childhood learning division of Khan Academy, a well-known nonprofit educational organization. Launched in 2018, the app targets children aged two to seven, offering foundational reading, math, and social-emotional learning through games, story-based lessons, hundreds of books, and videos — all completely free, with no ads or subscriptions.

The division traces its roots to Duck Duck Moose, a Sequoia-backed startup founded in 2008 that developed 21 educational apps downloaded more than 10 million times. Duck Duck Moose joined Khan Academy in 2016, providing the team and product foundation for what became Khan Academy Kids. Co-founder Caroline Hu Flexer leads a team of approximately 15 people including illustrators, animators, educational specialists, and engineers.

The curriculum was developed in collaboration with learning experts at Stanford and aligns with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and Common Core standards. Five characters, including narrator Kodi Bear, guide children through the content, incorporating social-emotional learning alongside academic skills. A 2020 study found that children using the app at least one hour per week improved their Test of Preschool Early Literacy scores.

Khan Academy Kids reaches millions of children globally, roughly half of them in the United States. Usage surged 300% in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the app's role as a key educational resource for families and classrooms. Innovations in adaptive early childhood edtech, curriculum design, or accessibility tools are directly relevant to this platform's mission.
