KLS Martin

German family-owned medical technology group specializing in surgical instruments and implants

KLS Martin Group — Company History

KLS Martin (the KLS Martin Group) is a privately held, family-run German medical technology company specializing in surgical instruments, implants, and surgical equipment. The group serves as the umbrella brand for KLS Martin operations in Germany and the USA, alongside numerous subsidiaries and representative offices worldwide. It is headquartered in Tuttlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and described as one of today's global market leaders in medical technology with over 1,700 employees worldwide.

The group's origins date to the 19th century: in 1896, Ludwig Leibinger, a trained watchmaker in Mühlheim an der Donau, founded Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik. Gebrüder Martin, a key production and sales arm, was founded on September 1, 1923. On November 1, 2023, the three remaining German companies — Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik (Mühlheim an der Donau), Gebrüder Martin (Tuttlingen), and KLS Martin (Freiburg) — merged into a single company.

The group offers more than 12,500 surgical instruments, implant systems for craniomaxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and hand surgery, as well as electrosurgical units, surgical laser systems, operating lights, and medical supply products. It positions itself as one of the globally leading suppliers in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery, with a portfolio covering advanced osteosynthesis and distraction, including patient-specific solutions. Its U.S. operations are based in Jacksonville, Florida, where it has established manufacturing for custom implants.

Given its focus on surgical instruments, implant systems, and patient-specific custom solutions, innovations in this space — such as advanced manufacturing, digital surgical planning, and personalized implants — are directly relevant to the company's core business.
