Founded in 2005 (originally as Guina Energy in Australia), it is wholly owned by Singapore-based Clermont Group and employs approximately 116 people.
The company develops electric propulsion units (EPUs), inverters, generators, and batteries built on an 800-volt architecture for aerospace applications. Its product lineup includes the magni350 and magni650 EPUs for fixed-wing aircraft, the HeliStorm EPU for helicopters, the magniAIR engine for general aviation, and Samson batteries launched in early 2024 with 300 Wh/kg energy density.
magniX has achieved several aviation firsts: powering the world's first all-electric commercially-focused aircraft (a De Havilland Beaver, 2019), the world's largest all-electric aircraft at the time (a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, 2020), and Eviation's Alice—the world's first clean-sheet all-electric passenger plane (2022). It was also the first company granted FAA special conditions for electric engine airworthiness.
NASA awarded magniX a US$74.3 million contract in 2021 under its Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration program. The company has been recognized by Fast Company as Most Innovative Company in Energy and received the Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Leadership Award. Reed Macdonald became CEO in May 2023.
