Max Planck Institute for AstronomyFounded in 1967 and located in Heidelberg, Germany, the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) is part of the Max Planck Society. The institute employs approximately 290 staff members, with the majority serving in scientific and technical roles. Its research focuses on the formation of stars and planets, the study of exoplanets, and the evolution of galaxies over cosmic history.
Beyond theoretical research, MPIA develops observation instruments in its own workshops. It has contributed to major ground-based facilities like the Very Large Telescope and Extremely Large Telescope, as well as space-based missions including the James Webb Space Telescope, the Euclid space telescope, and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
The institute also engages in interdisciplinary work through the "Heidelberg Initiative for the Origins of Life" (HIFOL) and collaborates with the Haus der Astronomie for education and outreach. Innovation in instrumentation and space-based observation is central to its mission of conducting internationally competitive astronomical research.
