Medical Educators
The UK's standard-setting multiprofessional body for clinical teachers and medical educators.
Academy of Medical Educators – About AoMEThe Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) is a multiprofessional organisation and the recognised standard-setting body for clinical teachers in the United Kingdom. Founded on 1 October 2006 and registered as a charity in England and Wales (Charity No. 1128988), it serves as the professional home for anyone involved in the education and training of medical, dental, and veterinary professionals across undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing professional development stages.
AoME develops and maintains Professional Standards that represent an authoritative consensus on the values, knowledge, and behaviours expected of a medical educator. These standards underpin a national accreditation framework through which educators can demonstrate expertise, with members awarded the designation MAcadMEd (Member of the Academy of Medical Educators) and fellows the designation FAcadMEd.
The Academy is governed by a Council of Trustees—also the Directors of the company—comprising 18 members, 16 of whom are elected by the membership. Nick Cooper has served as President since 2023. AoME is headquartered at Cardiff University School of Medicine, Heath Park, Cardiff.
For any innovation aimed at improving medical education standards, professional development, or educator accreditation in the UK, AoME represents a directly relevant stakeholder as the body responsible for setting and promoting those very standards across medicine, dentistry, and veterinary surgery.
