Meta AI's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab was founded in 2013 as Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research, co-founded by Yann LeCun and Robert Fergus. Following Facebook's rebranding to Meta Platforms Inc., the lab's name was updated to Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research. Its mission is to advance state-of-the-art AI through open, fundamental research.

FAIR has been a significant contributor to the broader AI field, with pioneering work in self-supervised learning, generative adversarial networks, computer vision, and natural language processing. The lab led development of early Llama large language models (Llama 1 and Llama 2) and played a central role in creating PyTorch, which now runs more than 5 trillion inferences per day across 50 data centers globally.

FAIR operates globally with workspaces in Menlo Park, London, New York City, Paris, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Tel Aviv, and Montreal. In 2016, FAIR co-founded the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence alongside Google, Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft. As of 2025, Robert Fergus — who rejoined from Google DeepMind — leads the lab, with Yann LeCun continuing as Meta's Chief AI Scientist.

In 2025, FAIR is refocusing its efforts toward Advanced Machine Intelligence (human-level AI/AGI), aligned with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's planned capital expenditure of $60–$65 billion in AI infrastructure.
