Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) is a cabinet-level executive department of the State Council, headquartered in Beijing. Established in April 2018, it consolidated environmental protection functions that were previously fragmented across multiple agencies, including those managing land, water, agriculture, and marine environments.

The MEE is responsible for policy development, regulation, and supervision of China's air, water, and land to protect them from pollution and contamination. Its mandate includes enforcing regulations on pollutant emissions, implementing action plans to prevent soil and water pollution, and managing the reduction and eventual ban of imported garbage.

Additionally, the MEE oversees climate change responses and national ecological inspections. The ministry engages internationally, notably through a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
