The government body responsible for setting the health agenda and overseeing the health sector in Malawi.

The Ministry of Health of Malawi, headquartered in Lilongwe, is responsible for developing, reviewing, and enforcing health policies, spearheading sector reforms, and mobilizing health resources. It oversees a network of approximately 1,100 health facilities across public, private-not-for-profit, and private-for-profit sectors, including major referral hospitals in all three regions of the country.

Operating in a context with one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios on the continent—fewer than five physicians per 100,000 people—the Ministry utilizes a large community health workforce of salaried Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs). The Ministry aims to scale this workforce to approximately 13,000 to achieve a target ratio of one HSA per 1,000 population.

The Ministry's current strategic direction, outlined in the Health Sector Strategic Plan III (2023–2030), is oriented toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This includes the delivery of an Essential Health Package (EHP) providing no-cost priority interventions for maternal and neonatal care, childhood illness, malaria, HIV, and TB.
