National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is a federal research institute established in 1948 under the National Dental Research Act. It is one of 27 institutes and centers within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), operating under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.

NIDCR's mission centers on advancing fundamental knowledge about dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) health and disease, and translating findings into prevention, early detection, and treatment strategies. Its research portfolio spans a wide range of conditions including oral cancers, caries, periodontal disease, temporomandibular disorders, craniofacial defects, salivary dysfunction, orofacial pain, and health disparities. NIDCR also describes itself as the world's largest oral health research enterprise.

The institute funds scientific research through congressional appropriations and supports conferences, symposia, and workshops aligned with its public health mission. It established the National Oral Health Information Clearinghouse in 1993 to serve health professionals, patients, and the public. The current Acting Director is Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, D.D.S., Ph.D.
