National Transport Authorities

Established on December 1, 2009, the National Transport Authority (NTA) is a statutory, non-commercial body reporting to the Department of Transport. It oversees public transport services across Ireland under the Transport for Ireland (TFI) brand, managing state-subsidised bus and rail services including Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland, Irish Rail, and Luas tram services.

The NTA is responsible for the planning, development, and funding of sustainable transport modes and the regulation of commercial public bus services. It works with local authorities to deliver active travel infrastructure for cycling, walking, and wheelchair use, while providing integrated ticketing via the TFI Leap Card and real-time passenger information.

Operating at a significant scale, the TFI network averages over 1 million passenger journeys daily. The authority receives approximately €1.6 billion in annual government grants, with a 2024 allocation of €1.01 billion for its Capital Investment Programme. Additionally, the NTA is funding roughly 800 Active Travel projects to develop 1,000 km of walking and cycling infrastructure by 2025.
