National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation

The National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation (NUCDF) is the only nonprofit organization in the world focused exclusively on urea cycle disorders (UCD), rare metabolic conditions that affect approximately 1 in 14,000 births and can cause severe developmental disability. Founded in 1988 by parents of affected children, NUCDF has grown into an internationally recognized leader in patient support, education, and research advocacy for this rare disease community.

NUCDF actively serves over 2,000 patients and families, providing information, support, medical referrals, and networking resources for both families and healthcare professionals. The organization also sponsors an Annual Family and Scientific Conference bringing together patients, caregivers, and clinicians to share the latest treatment and research developments.

On the research front, NUCDF co-founded the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium (UCDC) with clinical researchers to establish centers of excellence for collaborative clinical research. This consortium received a $6 million NIH grant through the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network. NUCDF has also established a Fellowship Award program for emerging researchers and contributed to federal legislation including the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act.

An innovation improving diagnosis, treatment, or management of rare metabolic disorders—or tools that support rare disease patient advocacy, research coordination, or newborn screening—would be directly relevant to NUCDF's mission and its current initiative to build a multistakeholder partner network and develop a UCD research roadmap.
