New York City Department of Sanitation

One of the largest and oldest sanitation departments in the world, responsible for waste management in New York City.

Founded in 1881 as the Department of Street Cleaning and renamed the Department of Sanitation in 1929, the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is headquartered at 125 Mulberry Street in Manhattan. Known as "New York's Strongest," the agency operates with a budget of approximately $2 billion and a workforce of nearly 7,000 uniformed sanitation workers and additional civilian staff.

The department manages a fleet of approximately 4,300 vehicles, including 2,000 collection trucks, to collect roughly 11,000 tons of refuse and 2,000 tons of recycling daily. Recent initiatives include the citywide expansion of curbside composting in October 2024, trash containerization, Clean Curbs, and rat mitigation efforts.
