NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences)

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a government-funded Institute of National Importance located on a 135-acre campus in Bengaluru, India. Established in its current form on 27 December 1974 through the merger of the State Mental Hospital and the All India Institute of Mental Health, it was granted Deemed University status in 1994 and elevated to an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 2012. It operates under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

NIMHANS pursues a tripartite mission of patient care, research, and training across psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery. Its NABH-accredited hospital has 1,096 beds and all laboratories are NABL accredited. The institute comprises 28 departments and has trained more than 1,000 psychiatrists and around 600 clinical psychologists and psychiatric nurses serving both national and international contexts.

The institute serves more than half a million patients annually, drawing patients from across India and neighbouring countries. It acts as the nodal centre for national mental health policy, advising Central and State Governments on psychiatric facilities and national mental health programmes. In 2023–24, faculty, students, and project staff published approximately 945 scientific articles in reputed journals.
