Established in 1901 as the National Bureau of Standards and renamed in 1988, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The agency employs approximately 3,400 people and operated with an annual budget of approximately $1.03 billion in FY 2021.

NIST develops standards, measurements, and technology to support U.S. economic competitiveness, product reliability, and technical security. Its work spans a wide range of applications, from atomic clocks and encryption standards to nanoscale devices and earthquake-resistant skyscrapers, conducted through internal research labs in collaboration with academia and industry.

Innovation in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence is currently a primary focus for the agency. NIST has developed the AI Risk Management Framework and the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF 2.0), and recently released a preliminary draft of the Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence to help organizations securely adopt AI while managing emerging risks.
