NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is a public research university headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, with additional campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund. Established by royal decree in 1996 through the merger of the University of Trondheim and other institutions, NTNU traces its roots to 1760 and holds the main national responsibility for education and research in engineering and technology.

With approximately 42,000 students and 9,000 employees as of 2022, NTNU is Norway's largest single university. Roughly half of its students study natural sciences or technology. Beyond its core STEM focus, NTNU offers broad academic programmes spanning humanities, social sciences, medicine, architecture, and entrepreneurship, and provides the widest range of art-subject education of any Norwegian university.

NTNU is deeply embedded in industrial and international research networks, with research staff engaged in around 2,000 R&D projects each year. The university holds formal cooperation agreements with leading Norwegian industrial companies and R&D contracts with international firms such as ABB, Shell, and BP Amoco. It collaborates closely with SINTEF Group and Allforsk to bridge academia and industry.

Innovations in science, engineering, and technology are directly relevant to NTNU given its national mandate in these fields and its active role in applied R&D partnerships. The university ranks broadly within the 101–400 range globally and counts three Nobel laureates in physiology or medicine among its academics.
