Organic Acidemia Association (OAA) — About

Organic acidurias (also called organic acidemias) are a group of inheritable genetic metabolic disorders in which a defect in protein metabolism causes an essential enzyme to be absent or malfunctioning, leading to the characteristic accumulation of carboxylic acids detectable via GC/MS analysis of urine. They represent a distinct and serious patient population within the broader rare/ultra-rare metabolic disease space.

Patients with organic acidurias face significant clinical burdens, including cardiac involvement — most notably dilated cardiomyopathy — contributing to disability and premature death. Currently, no cures exist for these conditions, and management relies on dietary restriction, supplementation, and supportive care, making research into new therapies critically important.

The primary U.S. advocacy body for this community is the Organic Acidemia Association (OAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Golden Valley, Minnesota, connecting thousands of affected patients and families through newsletters, international conferences, newborn screening advocacy, and research fundraising. In 2017 the OAA co-launched the largest-ever study of rare organic acid disorders, and it is a founding member of the ROAR consortium — the first multi-site prospective longitudinal U.S. study on organic acidemias, coordinated through Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. At the European level, the E-IMD Consortium works to harmonise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies across member states.

Innovations targeting metabolic pathway correction, enzyme replacement, gene therapy, or cardiac complication management are directly relevant to this patient population, which remains severely underserved by current treatment options.
