Penguin Random House

World's largest trade book publisher, formed by the 2013 merger of Penguin and Random House

Penguin Random House – Our Story

Penguin Random House is a global publishing house formed on July 1, 2013, through a £2.4 billion merger of Bertelsmann's Random House and Pearson's Penguin Group. Headquartered in New York City, it is widely regarded as the world's largest trade book publisher. Bertelsmann became the sole owner of the company following a 2019 purchase completed in 2020.

The company operates more than 300 editorially independent imprints and brands across six continents, publishing in more than 20 countries worldwide. It employs more than 11,000 people across 58 locations globally and releases over 16,000 new titles annually, selling more than 700 million print, audio, and eBooks each year. Its publishing lists include more than 80 Nobel Prize laureates.

Penguin Random House publishes adult and children's fiction and nonfiction across a full range of formats — hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, audio, electronic, and digital — generating approximately $7.7 billion in annual revenue. Its mission is to ignite a universal passion for reading by creating books for everyone.

As a dominant force in global publishing, Penguin Random House is highly relevant to innovations in content distribution, digital publishing, audiobooks, and rights management, given its scale, diverse imprint portfolio, and broad international reach.
