Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Non-profit organization promoting plant-based medicine, preventive health, and ethical scientific research
PCRM – About UsThe Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit research and advocacy organization founded in 1985 by Neal D. Barnard, M.D., who continues to serve as President. The organization promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research, and advocates for higher standards of ethics and effectiveness in scientific research, with a focus on plant-based nutrition and animal welfare in research contexts.
PCRM has nearly one million members, including more than 17,000 physicians, and employs between 51–200 staff. Its work spans public health education, policy advocacy, and direct intervention in animal welfare cases through negotiations, public campaigns, and legal action. The organization has historically lobbied for federal nutrition guidelines emphasizing plant-based food groups and publishes an annual ranking of hospital food healthfulness.
The organization actively engages policymakers to restrict animal testing and promote nonanimal research methods, and its research has been published in leading medical journals. Its dual focus on human health and animal welfare makes it a notable voice in both the nutrition and biomedical research ethics spaces.
Innovations related to plant-based nutrition science, alternative research methods, or preventive medicine would be directly relevant to PCRM's core mission of improving human and animal lives through ethical, evidence-based approaches to health and science.
