The Progressive Corporation — Form 10-K, FY2024 (SEC Filing)

The Progressive Corporation is an American insurance holding company headquartered in Mayfield Village, Ohio, founded in 1937 by Joseph Lewis and Jack Green as Progressive Mutual Insurance Company. For more than 85 years, the company has grown from an affordable auto insurer into one of the largest personal and commercial insurance providers in the United States, ranking #62 on the 2024 Fortune 500 list. As of 2026, Progressive is the top private automotive insurer in the U.S. by premiums written.

Progressive insures passenger vehicles, motorcycles, RVs, trailers, boats, personal watercraft, and commercial vehicles, and also offers home, life, and pet insurance through select partners. Its Commercial division, launched in 1971, has expanded into general liability, professional liability, workers' compensation, cyber insurance, and more. Personal Lines represents approximately 85% of companywide net premiums written.

In 2024, Progressive wrote $74.4 billion in net premiums — up $12.9 billion from 2023 — and ended the year with 35 million policies in force, an increase of over 5 million. Companywide net premiums written grew 21% year-over-year, with an underwriting profit margin of 11.2%. The company employs approximately 70,053 people and is led by CEO Tricia Griffith.

Progressive's scale and data-driven underwriting model make it a highly relevant adopter of innovations in insurtech, telematics, AI-driven risk assessment, and claims automation. The company trades on the NYSE under the ticker PGR.
