Reggio Emilia Approach Schools

The Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy for children ages 0–6 that originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy, following World War II. Founded formally in 1963 by educator Loris Malaguzzi, parents, and teachers, the approach is based on the belief that children are capable learners and active participants in their own education.

The philosophy centers on an emergent curriculum that evolves based on the interests of children and the community, rather than a predetermined structure. A core tenet is the "Hundred Languages of Children," which encourages the use of diverse symbolic representations such as painting, sculpture, music, and dramatic play to express ideas.

Now adopted in more than 145 countries, including over 1,200 schools in the United States, the movement is supported by institutions like the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre and the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA). Innovation in this space is relevant to the approach's commitment to children's rights and the ongoing development of self-expression and learning.
