Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB)

Rwanda's national agency for agriculture and animal resources research and extension.

RAB Official Website – About RAB Overview

The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) is an autonomous Rwandan government institution dedicated to advancing the country's agriculture and animal resources sectors. It was originally established by Law N°38/2010 of 25/11/2010, with its mission, organization, and functioning later defined under Law N°14/2017, and it is currently governed by Presidential Order N°074/01 of 09/12/2022.

RAB's core mission is to develop agriculture and animal resources through research and through agricultural and animal-resources extension services, increasing the productivity and quality of agricultural and animal products and their derivatives. Its broader aim is to champion the development of Rwanda's agriculture sector into a knowledge-based, technology-driven, and market-oriented industry, applying modern methods across crops, animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry, and soil and water management.

The board's work centers on agricultural research, technology development and dissemination, and farmer extension services. It implements national agricultural policies and operates programs and projects—often donor-funded—aimed at boosting productivity, sustainability, and market linkages, including sustainable agricultural productivity initiatives and livestock production modernization efforts.

RAB operates under the oversight of Rwanda's Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), led by a Director General and a Board of Directors, and guides its work through medium-term strategic plans (e.g., the RAB Strategic Plan 2020–2024) aligned with Rwanda's agriculture transformation and Vision 2050 goals. Because its mandate is built on research, technology development, and dissemination to farmers, innovations in this space are directly relevant to RAB's mission.
