The company was created in May 2015 through the combination of Nature Publishing Group, Macmillan Education and Springer Science+Business Media, bringing together the science publishing assets of Holtzbrinck Publishing Group and Springer (backed by private equity firm BC Partners). Its roots trace back to the original Springer-Verlag, founded in Germany by Julius Springer in 1842, and to the prominent scientific journal Nature.
In 2024, Springer Nature listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with its main shareholders being Holtzbrinck and BC Partners. As of 4 October 2024, Springer Nature AG & Co. KGaA (ISIN: DE000SPG1003) was listed in the Prime Standard segment with an initial share price of EUR 24.00, valuing the company at close to €4.9 billion at its debut. For 2023, the company reported adjusted operating profit of €511 million (up 4.9% from 2022) and revenue of €1.85 billion (up 1.7%).
Led by CEO Frank Vrancken Peeters, who joined in 2017 as Chief Commercial Officer and became CEO in September 2019, the company operates at the heart of scholarly communication. As a major publisher and platform for research dissemination, innovations in this space—such as in publishing technology, content discovery, and research workflows—are directly relevant to its scale and operations.
