State Farm Newsroom — 2024 Financial Results

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is a privately held mutual insurance and financial services group headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois. Founded on June 8, 1922 by George J. Mecherle—who believed Illinois farmers should pay lower premiums because they drove less and had fewer losses than urbanites—the company expanded beyond auto coverage, opening a second branch in Berkeley, California, and establishing State Farm Life Insurance Company in 1929.

Today State Farm operates at massive scale, with more than 19,200 agent offices and over 62,000 employees serving more than 96 million policies and accounts. Its business lines span personal auto, homeowners/fire, life, and health insurance, as well as banking and financial services products, distributed primarily through its large network of dedicated agents. Jon Farney became President in January 2024, succeeding Michael Tipsord, and serves as President & CEO effective June 1, 2024.

Financially, the State Farm P-C group reported earned premium of $103.0 billion in 2024 with a combined underwriting loss of $6.1 billion (improved from a $14.1 billion underwriting loss in 2023). The group reported 2024 net income of $5.3 billion (versus a $6.3 billion net loss in 2023), and the parent company's net worth ended the year at $145.2 billion, up from $134.8 billion at year-end 2023.

Given its enormous policy base, large agent network, and exposure to underwriting volatility (including catastrophe-driven losses), innovations affecting underwriting, claims, pricing, distribution, or financial services are highly relevant to an organization of this scale.
